VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Christopher Newport University cross country teams started off their 2011 season with wins over Virginia Wesleyan in the VWC Dual Meet. This is the second straight year the Captains have topped the Marlins to begin their season.

The women's squad finished with 27 points to Virginia Wesleyan's 29 in the 3,850m. The finishes for the top five runners from each squad are added to give each team their total. Senior Jade Zaharoff led the Captains and finished first with a time of 14:52. She was followed by two Marlins who came in at 15:02 and 15:14.

Karen Bumiller finished fourth for the Captains at 15:36. Erin Rolaf and Jessica McClelland finished 6th and 7th with times of 15:53 and 15:57, respectively. Also scoring for the Captains is newcomer Julie Machamer who finished ninth overall at 16:06.

On the men's side, the Captains finished with 27 points in the 5,850m while Virginia Wesleyan totaled 32. Marlin Sean Whitson took the top spot finishing at 18:45 but Captain Ray Gamache finished just seconds later at 18:57 to take second.

Corey Lofton ran a 19:11 putting him in fourth place. Also scoring for the Captains were Josh Bowling coming in at 19:43, Dan Austin at 19:57 and Patrick Cunningham at 19:59. The Captains also took tenth through 18th before the next Marlin finished in 19th at 20:45.
