CNU Names Barreau Cross Country CoachPublished by
NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics C.J. Woollum and Track & Field Head Coach Tyler Wingard today announced the hiring of MATTHEW BARREAU as the school's new Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach.
Barreau, a native of Springfield, Oregon, is a 2004 cum laude graduate of Western Oregon University. He arrives at CNU with a wealth of coaching experience. He will begin his new duties immediately as the Captains prepare for the cross country season this fall.
“We are very excited to have Matthew Barreau joining our coaching staff,” Woollum said. “His experience, attitude, and work ethic will help continue the success of our outstanding cross country and track & field programs.”
Barreau most recently served as an assistant coach at two Division I schools, Bethune-Cookman in Florida during the 2009-10 season and Portland State from 2005 to 2008. His resume also included stints as an assistant coach at Concordia in Oregon (2008-09), Adams State (2004-05), Western Oregon (2003-04), and at several high schools.
In all, he has spent seven years in collegiate coaching and last year also served as an editor of a website dedicated to running, RunnerSpace.com, traveling extensively to cover meets across the country including the Penn Relays, the USATF Indoor Championships, and the USA Club Outdoor Championships.
“My high school coach made such an impact on my life that I decided at the age of 15 I wanted to dedicate my life to coaching,” Barreau said. “I am so excited to be at Christopher Newport and look forward to this tremendous opportunity.”
