USA South Announces Cross Country Individual Awards

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2012 Runner, Rookie and Coach of the Year awards for men's and women's cross country. For the women, Mary Baldwin College's Sophia Stone was named Runner of the Year, Christopher Newport University's Lydia Cromwell earned Rookie of the Year honors while her coach, Matthew Barreau captured Coach of the Year accolades. On the men's side, Christopher Newport swept the honors as Runner and Rookie of the Year accolades went to Ray Gamache and Josh Showalter, respectfully, while their coach Matthew Barreau was named Coach of the Year. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. All honors were determined by votes from the cross country coach at each institution.

Stone, a junior from Pacific Palisades, California, earns her second consecutive USA South Runner of the Year honor. She was the top performer in three of the four events she entered this fall.
Stone set both school and meet records at multiple events during the season. She had a season-best time of 21:48 at the Gettysburg Invitational where she placed first out of 394 runners. Additionally, Stone received three USA South Runner of the Week honors this fall and will now attempt to defend both her USA South and NCAA Division-III South/Southeast Regional Meet titles.

A freshman from Round Hill, Virginia, Cromwell played a key role in the Captains' successful 2012 season. She ran a season-best time of 23:01 at the 6,000 meter Willamette Invitational, placing 29th out of 212 runners. Cromwell collected USA South Runner of the Week honors once and Rookie of the Week accolades twice this fall.

Gamache, a senior from Burlington, Vermont, earns USA South Runner of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. He competed in just two races during the regular season but fared well in both. He won the CNU/Virginia Wesleyan Opener in a time of 27:39 and placed 13th out of 170 runners at the Willamette Invitational in a time of 25:38 which was the fastest 8,000 meter time in the Conference this season. Additionally, Gamache was named USA South Runner of the Week twice this season and will now attempt to defend his USA South Meet Championship from a year ago.

A Leesburg, Virginia freshman, Showalter
has been an integral part of the Captains squad. His best performance of the season came at the Willamette Invitational where he posted a time of 26:41 on the 8,000 meter course to finish 65th out of 170 runners. Showalter was named USA South Runner of the Week once and Rookie of the Week four times this fall.

Barreau is currently in his second season at the helm of Christopher Newport's men's and women's cross country programs. He collected his second consecutive men's coach of the year honor and first on the women's side. Currently, Barreau has both the men and women Captains ranked in the South/Southeast Region. The Captain's hosted two events this fall as the women were victorious twice and the men once.

The remainder of the both the Men's and Women's All-Conference teams will be decided at the upcoming USA South Championships. On the men's side, the all-conference first team will consist of the top-seven finishers while the second team will consist of finishers eight-14. On the women's side, there will be three all-conference teams. First team all-conference will consist of the top-seven finishers, the next seven finishers will be named second team all-conference while the following seven finishers will earn third team all-conference accolades. The Conference Championship Meet will take place on Saturday, October 27 at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. The men will run first at 11:00am, followed by the women at 12:00pm.
